You probably know Descartes’ famous words: “I think, therefore I am.”
This phrase symbolizes Western philosophy, which tried to build everything on reason alone as the only reliable foundation.
But what if this “thinking” cannot exist without emotion?
What if the flame of emotion is what actually lights the lamp of reason?

What Was Descartes’ “Error”?
René Descartes is known as the father of modern philosophy.
Through “methodical doubt,” he doubted everything and concluded that the only thing he could be certain of was the thinking self — pure reason as the essence of human beings.
However, modern neuroscience has fundamentally shaken this view.
As neuroscientist Antonio Damasio pointed out in his famous book Descartes’ Error (1994),
patients with damage to the emotional centers of the brain could retain logical knowledge but became unable to make practical, real-world decisions.
What Brain Science Tells Us About the Necessity of Emotion
Our brain operates through three major networks working together (this framework is widely accepted in current neuroscience):
- Salience Network (SN): Quickly detects emotions and important stimuli — acts as the “switch.”
- Executive Control Network (ECN): Handles logical thinking and concentration — the “rational” part.
- Default Mode Network (DMN): Involved in self-reflection and thinking about “who I am.”
The crucial point is this:
If the Salience Network (emotion) is not functioning properly, the Executive Control Network (reason) cannot work sufficiently either.
Without emotion flipping the switch, reason just spins its wheels.
Pascal and Aristotle Already Knew This
Blaise Pascal once said:
“The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.”
Aristotle taught the virtue of “the mean” — that true rationality lies in maintaining proper balance and avoiding excess or deficiency in emotions.
Brain science has now scientifically confirmed what they intuitively understood.
A form of discipline that treats emotion as an enemy goes against how the brain actually works.
A Question for You — What Is Real Discipline?
On nights when you feel crushed by the voice saying “I have to be proper,”
the very moment you try to suppress your emotions might be when you are unconsciously repeating Descartes’ mistake.
True discipline is not the suppression of emotion, but “acquired non-action” that makes emotion an ally.
It is the power to first accept everything in the “heart’s trash dump,” then quietly govern it.
It is simply being present in the “here and now,” listening to the sound of rain.
This is the new form of discipline that brain science is teaching us.
