What is the Heart? — The Quiet Answers Philosophy Has Accumulated: Chapter 6 — Practicing the "Sacred Void" — The Heart's Trash Bin and Doing Nothing

Hello everyone. This is Akira.

In the previous chapter, we saw how the modern mind becomes exhausted by constantly chasing imperfect copies, and how creating a "Sacred Void" allows the mind to reorient itself toward its original direction—toward what is more true and important.

This time, we will look more deeply into how to incorporate this Sacred Void into daily life and put it into concrete practice.

Within the time of the Sacred Void, the mind gradually begins to let go, recognizing "This is not necessary right now."

You will likely feel the expectations of "I have to do this" and "It has to be this way" that have been circling in your head slowly quiet down.

This sensation of letting go marks the beginning of the "Heart's Trash Bin."

By temporarily setting aside the imperfect copies we have been chasing, along with the miscellaneous information, comparisons, and unfinished thoughts accumulated in our minds during this blank time, the mind finally begins to regain its lightness.

The Heart's Trash Bin refers to the intentional act of letting go of the miscellaneous information, expectations, comparisons, and unfinished tasks that have piled up in daily life.

Simply acknowledging in your heart during the time of the Sacred Void, "This is not necessary right now," allows surprisingly many things to naturally fall away.

Even the imperfect copies we have been pursuing can be set aside in that moment.

When we gradually increase this time of "doing nothing," changes begin to appear in our actual experience.

At first there was only boredom and impatience, but eventually a sense of liberation—"I don't have to think about anything"—and a feeling of lightness in the head emerge.

And strangely enough, within that void, the question "What is truly important?" sometimes arises naturally.

This is a fundamental insight that did not appear when we tried to think about it deliberately.

The key to incorporating it into daily life is not to aim for perfection.

Just five minutes while drinking your morning coffee, time spent gazing out the train window, short breaks between tasks at work… By simply accumulating these small voids, the mind gradually recovers from exhaustion and slowly moves closer to the direction it originally sought to head toward.

The Sacred Void is not merely time for "resting." It is also an active practice through which the mind discards its own trash and restores its power to seek out what is essential.

The moment we stop chasing, the mind finally regains the margin to face itself.

Of course, the form of the void differs from person to person.

What is a Sacred Void for one person may feel like boredom to another.

What matters is intentionally creating time and space where you feel that "My mind feels a little lighter."

In the next chapter, we will summarize the ideas of Plato and modern rest practices we have explored so far, while also connecting them to Japanese thought and considering a more long-term way of being for the mind.

I look forward to sharing it with you!
